Periodontics

Periodontology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the periodontium. This includes the inflammatory changes of the gums and the tooth-bearing jawbone, known as periodontitis, which often lead to premature tooth loss if left untreated. Patients with periodontitis often notice an increased tendency to bleed gums, exposed tooth necks, bad breath or loosening of teeth. The disease runs painlessly for years or decades and therefore often goes unnoticed.

It is scientifically proven that patients suffering from periodontitis have a higher risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Periodontitis also has a negative influence on the treatment of diabetes. Pregnant women with advanced periodontitis have a higher risk of premature birth or miscarriage.

Periodontitis is primarily caused by inadequate oral hygiene and favoured by the following factors: genetic predisposition, smoking, stress, pregnancy, general diseases such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, immunodeficiency.

Periodontology is characterised above all by its preventive orientation. The continuous cooperation of the patient is decisive for the success of the therapy.
